Things to Consider When Applying to Grad School

Choosing The Right Program

When thinking about pursuing Graduate School, similar to undergraduate education, there are many programs in each state and across the country which may offer the degree you are interested in. Finding the right programs to apply to is important.

When thinking about where to apply, keep in mind:

  • Location - where is this program located; in-state or out-of-state, major city, available public transportation, and budget-friendly housing.

  • Cost/Financial Aid - program-support such as scholarships, tuition, additional fees (technology, textbooks and materials, etc.), etc.

  • Admission Requirements - admissions testing, letters of recommendation, required GPA, etc.

  • Type of Program - Masters, PhD (doctorate), graduate certificate, etc.

Admissions Testing

Applying to Graduate School typically requires an exam in addition to other application materials. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is the most common, but some fields such as Legal require a specific test like the LSAT.

The four most common standardized tests for Graduate School are:

  1. Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

  2. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

  3. Law School Admission Test (LSAT)

  4. Medical College Test (MCAT)

Application Materials

In addition to Admissions Testing, the Graduate School you apply to may require some additional materials in order to be considered for admissions, including:

  • Statement of Purpose - a written, formatted document that may explan your personal and professional experience, strengths, and academic or pressional interests which make you a great candidate for graduate school or their specific program.

  • Letters of Recommendation - written, formatted letters often written by current or former professors whose classes you took which endorse your academic and professional strengths and readiness to enter graduate-level programs.

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV) or Resume - an updated CV or resume which highlights your previous education, professional experience, awards or scholarships, and other professional achievements or activities.

  • Other Program-Specific Materials - depending on the program or school, you may be required to submit additional materials such as writing sample in addition to your application. Check the program's website for more information before applying.
